Adopt A Dog

When a dog is removed from consideration as a guide, it is offered to the volunteer who raised it as a puppy. If the puppy raiser does not adopt the dog, it becomes available to other homes. If the dog has potential to work in law enforcement, those organizations are given priority in selecting dogs. If the dog does not go to one of these agencies, we place the dog with a family in the community. Because adoptive families are responsible for meeting their dogs in Morristown, N.J., and transporting them home, we restrict adoptions to families in eastern states.

The majority of dogs available for adoption are between 1.5 and 4 years old. The youngest have learned basic obedience and are housebroken. Some have had a few weeks of dog guide training. Dogs that have retired from careers as guides also are available and usually are 7 years or older.

Factors that might qualify a young dog for adoption include:

  • Temperament problems including a lack of confidence when interacting with people or objects, dominance, or protective tendencies
  • Work-related problems such as fear of traffic, noise sensitivity, or distractibility
  • Medical problems such as chronic ear infections, allergies or inflammatory bowel disease

The waiting period will vary, depending on the requirements of the adoptive family. Those willing to adopt a dog with a more serious health or temperament problem experience a much shorter waiting period. The standard adoption fee of $1,000 (USD) also is reduced for these dogs, as it is for older dogs. Qualified applicants may reduce the waiting time and be placed on the VIP adoption list if they have given a gift of $25,000 (USD) or more in the past twenty four months.

All adoptable dogs have been neutered and have up-to-date vaccinations prior to being offered for adoption. If you wish to apply, please complete the Dog Adoption Application on-line and mail-in a $25 (USD) non-refundable application fee along with a copy of your printed on-line form to:
