Become a Volunteer

The Seeing Eye is fortunate to have a talented corps of volunteers who welcome our guests, fill dog food dishes, walk dogs, provide clerical assistance, socialize small puppies, and perform a multitude of other tasks. We are also seeking volunteers who can assist in event planning, videography, and other professional services.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email info@seeingeye.org to receive a volunteer application form.  Volunteer opportunities often are available to adults in the following categories:

Marketing Communications: We are seeking professionals to assist in the areas of photography, videography, event planning, merchandising, and more.

Dog Walkers: Adult volunteers exercise 60-80 lb. dogs that have been retired or rejected from the program and are awaiting adoption.  Many of these dogs have not completed training, so are somewhat undisciplined.  The walking times are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Because this program is so popular, there may be a waiting list.

Tour Guides: Volunteers conduct educational programs about The Seeing Eye. Campus tours take place on select Mondays and most Thursday mornings.  Tour guides also do outreach, providing off-site presentations to schools and community groups.

Grocery Run: On Monday and Thursday mornings shoppers receive a list of items requested by our in-class students for purchase in local stores.  All expenses are covered. Shopping locations may include the food store and the pharmacy.

Clerical Assistance: We frequently have the need for volunteers to input information into the computer, do light typing, stuff envelopes or file. These tasks are performed during our normal business hours, M-F, 8:30 a.m. till noon, and/or 1-4 p.m., unless otherwise specified by the department.

Gardening: Volunteers who have a green thumb or just enjoy the outdoors are welcome. Flowers are planted in the spring and given tender loving care throughout the summer.

Puppy Raisers: A family (or individual) raises one of our puppies from the age of 7-8 weeks to about 16-18 months. More information about this program is available by emailing puppyraisers@seeingeye.org.

Puppy Shuttle: Volunteers transport puppies requiring special care to and from various referral hospitals.

Van Washing: Volunteers transport dog vans to a local car wash on the Thursday and Friday between classes (2-3 vans each day). Vouchers will be provided for payment purposes.

Dog Bathing: On the day in-class students receive their dogs, volunteers provide a special bath to the dogs in preparation for the special event.  This occurs approximately once a month.

Reception: All receptionists at The Seeing Eye are volunteers.  They are responsible for greeting all guests and notifying staff when guests arrive.  They also sign for packages and very occasionally answer telephone calls.

All volunteers operating Seeing Eye vehicles require a driver’s license check and are covered under The Seeing Eye insurance policy. For a Volunteer Application form, please email us at: info@seeingeye.org
