Morristown – Our Classroom

Located just outside the town limits of Morristown, The Seeing Eye has utilized the streets and businesses of this historic town as its extended classroom since moving from Nashville, Tenn., in 1931. Instructors train the dogs there daily, and most days, students train with their new dogs around the town square, known as The Green, and in surrounding neighborhoods.

Town officials and business owners alike are proud to say they are part of the training process, as dogs and teams-in-training are welcomed into stores, restaurants, the county courthouse and other public facilities, all as part of the instructional program. Just blocks away from the town center are bucolic hills and farms, so students have an opportunity to train in settings that parallel whatever surroundings they have back home.

Founded in 1715 and the site of key events in the American Revolution, Morristown is rich in history. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Morristown one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations in the United States. Visitors to Morristown can enjoy unique shops, restaurants, theaters, parks, and historic sites.

Student Facilities

On The Seeing Eye’s campus just outside Morristown, N.J., the main building includes a student residence made up of 24 private rooms with private baths, a technology center, exercise room, library, and lounges. Each room has a full-size bed and a telephone for the student’s personal use. The residence wing has wireless internet access throughout.

Nurses are available to students 24 hours a day. Three gourmet meals are served each day in a restaurant-style dining room. The room is warmed by a roaring fireplace in winter and staffed year-round by caring, attentive staff members who get to know each and every student under their care.

During down-time, students can stroll with their new dogs around a 1/3-mile leisure path or spend a moment next to a gurgling fountain in the Memory Garden, dedicated in 2007 to the memory of all past Seeing Eye® dogs.

The technology center contains personal computers with internet access for students’ use and is home to a large library of books in audio, CD and Braille formats. Students also have access to laundry facilities and a fitness center.
