Raising Robbie: Spring is finally here

By Craig Garretson, Senior Communications Officer

A young yellow Lab puppy is catching some rays, lying on the grass on a beautiful sunny day.

Spring is finally here and with it unfortunately means… tick season! Seeing Eye puppy raisers are given a flea and tick preventative to give to our puppies, but we still regularly check for any eight-legged trespassers! Veterinarians advise to check your dog’s face, ears, tail, “arm pits,” and even between the toes. If you do find a tick on your pet, quickly remove with tweezers and dispose of it by putting it in a sealed bag and throwing it away, or by flushing it down the toilet. If you and your dog are an avid hiker or adventurer, check with your local pet store or veterinarian for a tick removal tool that you can attach to your leash or key chain. These inexpensive devices will allow you to quickly and safely remove ticks from your dog (and yourself).
